This Cabernet Sauvignon boldly boasts its Rutherford AVA sourcing with its great saturation of color, aromas and flavors. Its massive brambly blackberry, cassis and black plum expression intermingles with nuances of earthy forest loam, mocha, pipe tobacco, caramel and sweet oak spices. The structured “Rutherford dust” tannins give this wine its dense texture and expansive mouthfeel, while balanced acidity from the excellent growing season adds vibrancy.
“A beautiful and silky Napa cabernet that shows mint and berry character with hints of currants. Medium- to full-bodied, juicy and delicious. Vivid finish.” – James Suckling
Dry, early and shaking is how 2014 will be remembered in Napa Valley, yet it had a silver
lining with small, concentrated grapes and high quality. February’s rains brought the total
rainfall up from low to adequate, helping to relieve three years of drought conditions. Warm
temperatures promoted early budbreak in spring and accelerated grape maturation. Just as
harvest began, a dramatic 6.0 earthquake shook Napa Valley awake on August 24. We
finished the very compact, plentiful harvest by mid-October and celebrated the vintage’s
beautifully ripened grapes.
We selected 80 percent of the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this wine from vineyard blocks
in our historic BV Ranches No. 1, No. 2 and No.10, which provided the concentrated
dark-fruit character and firm structure that we desired. These vineyards, located on the
Rutherford Bench, have alluvial fan soils—composed of gravel, sand and loam—that allow the
vines to root deeply and develop complex minerality in the grapes. The balance came from
highly regarded growers whom we have worked closely with for many years.
