2018 Georges de Latour Private Reserve
Georges de Latour's 82nd Anniversary Dinner
Join Beaulieu Vineyard’s Winemaker and General Manager Trevor Durling at the gorgeous, private, family-owned Beaulieu Garden for a rare opportunity to dine on the property that the legendary Georges and Fernande de Latour purchased in 1900 and previously lived. During this celebration of the 82nd anniversary of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, guests will be treated to a tasting of the newly released 2018 vintage along with select library wines.
This one-of-a-kind evening is not to be missed, particularly as it is the first time since the 1940s that Beaulieu Vineyard is hosting an event at this spectacular property. Experience Georges de Latour’s profound impact on the development of Napa wine country beginning with a cocktail hour walk around the family estate to view the grounds and compelling historical artifacts recently uncovered at the winery, followed by a seated, three-course dinner beneath an arbor of trees overlooking the beautiful lawn and pool.
When André Tchelistcheff joined Beaulieu Vineyard in 1938, he tasted the de Latour family’s private wine – what they called “Private Reserve” – from the 1936 vintage. This Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine was so distinctive that Tchelistcheff insisted it be bottled and sold as the winery’s flagship offering. In 1940, Beaulieu Vineyard released the first vintage of Private Reserve and named it in our founder’s honor. The resulting wine became the first release of Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, a wine that was destined to become Napa Valley’s first “cult” Cabernet. In 70+ years since, Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has become the benchmark of Napa Valley Cabernet as one of the most collected American wines.
The 2018 Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is exceptional, with a beautifully expressive nose full of ripe berry fruit aromas of raspberry, red currant, black cherry and black currant, alongside hints of fresh chaparral herbs like wild lavender, violet and rose, fresh mint, sage, bay laurel and juniper berry. Signature “Rutherford Dust” tannins add a velvety-rich, cocoa-powder texture, supple length and firm presence to the lengthy finish, while secondary notes of earth, clay, dark chocolate and espresso dance on the palate until your next sip. The mouthwatering palate is silky, ethereal and sinewy, with a line of vibrant acidity, while also seamlessly integrating with the full-bodied texture, crafting a wine that is nuanced, indulgent and plentiful, offering layers of complexity, depth and structure. Inviting and beguiling now, this Cabernet is youthful and spirited, but will surely allow for age-worthiness for many years to come, if you can keep your hands off it.
The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 Cabernets are of very high quality with plenty of concentrated flavors, color and excellent acidity.
