Tasting Notes

Our 2017 Reserve Pinot Noir is incredibly aromatic and expressive with beautifully balanced, flavorful fruit. Notes of lifted vibrant Bing cherry and fresh blackberry are layered with nuances of red berry cobbler and stewed strawberries. This Pinot is soft and round with good saturation and mid-palate structure, leading to a voluptuous silky mouthfeel. Fine tannins frame the flavors, while hints of mocha and fresh tea leaf from new French oak barrels offer savory aromas and a lengthy, persistent, red-fruit finish.

Vineyard Notes

Our Pinot Noir is sourced from some of our finest estate vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, with the majority coming from our Los Carneros estate in the far Northwest corner of the Carneros appellation. Unlike most of Carneros, which is largely uplifted bay bottoms with soils composed of clay, the soils at here are variations of soils influenced by volcanic origin. Combining these well-drained, rocky upland soils with the extreme western location closer to the Pacific Ocean and San Pablo Bay make this site an ideal place to grow Burgundian varieties, of which up to 20 distinct Pinot Noir clones are planted. These reserve-quality grapes yield impeccably balanced Pinot Noir with abundant personality. A selection of Dijon clones perfumed the wine with floral and vibrant red-fruit notes, while Pommard clones enhanced the wine’s dark-fruit flavors, structure and minerality.

Vintage Notes

In the micro-climate of Carneros, cool weather during spring flowering impacted vine yields, but with lower yields, quality typically increases, and that is very characteristic of this vintage. Ample winter rains continued to recharge aquifers and rebuild storage lost during drought years. Near perfect summer weather with traditional diurnal temperature swings averaging 25-40 degrees in difference defined the sunny days and transitions to cool nights. August cooled a bit, allowing for extended hang time, and the varietal flavors more fully developed. A high-pressure system stalled and held cooling fog off the coast line as September arrived, leading to one of the earliest harvests experienced here, finishing just after Labor Day.

Winemaking Notes

The grapes for this Reserve Pinot Noir benefited from our state-of-the-art optical sorter technology, which scrutinizes every berry to obtain the highest quality fruit. The Carneros Estate Pinot Noir underwent cold maceration in small lot open-top fermenters with extended time on the skins and including a small number of whole clusters. Vineyard lots are vinified and aged individually and final blending is subject to a rigorous selection process, whereby only the best casks are chosen for this Reserve Pinot Noir. The wine is aged in French Oak with a small percentage of new barrels integrated and developed the wine’s flavors.
