Vintage 2014
Wine Type Red
Varietal Zinfandel
Region Napa Valley
Winemaker Jeffrey Stambor
Vibrant and spicy notes of blackberry, black cherry and dark plum leap from the glass. Hints of black licorice with both peppery and sweet spices waft over the core of black fruit. This wine’s complex fruit character comes from the half-century-old Zinfandel vines of BV’s Ranch No. 11 in northern Napa Valley. Flavors are intense with firm tannins that carry the jumble of ripe, juicy berries through the lengthy, lingering finish. Nuances of vanilla and allspice from new oak barrels seamlessly integrate with the Zinfandel varietal flavors during barrel aging.

Vineyard Note

Planted in 1968, the head-trained vines in the nine-acre section of old Zinfandel yield extraordinarily concentrated, spicy wine. A keen eye for viticulture might see these vines and dismiss them for their expression of anomalies and lack of vigor, yet these struggling vines consistently produce fruit of exceptional quality and complexity. This vineyard is one of Napa Valley’s gems.

Winemaker's Note

We hand sorted the grapes for optimum quality. To develop our Zinfandel’s inherent spiciness, we cold soaked the crushed grapes for gentle extraction before fermentation in stainless steel tanks. After pressing, the wine completed malolactic fermentation in barrels for roundness and complexity. Barrel aging balanced seductive oak nuances with the dense fruit expression of old vines ripened to perfection by an excellent vintage.
