2018 Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 1 Maestro Reserve Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon

2018 Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 1 Maestro Reserve Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon

2018 Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 1 Maestro Reserve Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon

The Grapes for this wine are sourced from Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 1 on the Rutherford Bench. This is our original vineyard, acquired in 1900. Selective blending of superior blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot produces a supple and approachable wine that boasts bold aromas and flavors of ripe berries. A generous dose of French oak provides roundness, integrating the rich and fruit flavors with opulent, mouth filling texture.

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Ranch No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon offers lifted aromas of fresh black currant and blueberry with hints of anise seed, green coffee bean, and delicate barrel spice. The palate is rich and full in structure, with a through line of acidity supported by exotic flavors of pomegranate, black pepper, and wild violet leading to a long persistent finish.

The Napa Valley region enjoyed a stunning, near picture-perfect 2018 growing season including good winter rains, mild spring weather and steady temperatures throughout that allowed for even flowering and bud break. These ideal growing conditions were followed by a cool, even, and slow-paced harvest which allowed the winery to vinify wines at a gentle pace. The resulting 2018 wines are of very high quality with plenty of concentrated flavors, color, and excellent acidity.

Vineyard & Winemaking Details

Rutherford AVA

Planted in the early 1900s, Ranch No. 1 is a 128-acre property in the heart of Rutherford encompassing the original Georges de Latour Estate. The vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot on the Rutherford bench with a variety of alluvial soils that foster exceptional quality in Bordeaux-style varietals. The well-draining gravel loam soils allow for deep rooting and the development of grapes with complex flavors.

After hand harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery. The grapes were destemmed and cold soaked 5 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the roughly 12-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 20 months in 100% new French oak barrels giving the final wine softened tannins and beautiful toasty barrel notes.
