The 2021 Touriga Nacional is a highly aromatic and complex wine honoring the unique
character of this Portuguese varietal. The wine catches the eye with an inky, deep purple
hue, while the nose unveils an enticing scent of boysenberry, blackberry, violets, and
raspberries. On the palate, this wine reveals notes of mixed berry compote, wild sage,
warm baking spice, and blueberry, balanced by streamlined acidity, and plush tannins
leading to a lifted finish. Suggested to age for the next 7 years till 2030.

Winemaking

The fruit was harvested in the cool of the morning and brought to the winery where the berries were gently sorted and destemmed. The grapes cold-soaked 7 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 18 months in French oak before being blended.

Vintage

The 2021 season saw exceptionally high-quality fruit, producing some of the best in recent years. Early winter rain led to minimal precipitation for the remainder of the season, providing an ideal environment for grape development with budbreak early in April, followed by flowering and bloom in May. The summer provided early and even ripening, with veraison appearing in early July. Low yields, partly due to drought conditions, created intensely flavored fruit and smaller berry size. The moderate weather allowed for long, even ripening and our winemakers took their time bringing in grapes. This long season crafted wines with unprecedented color extraction, aromatic intensity, and structure that are equally lush and fruit driven.

Vineyard

Sourced from our historic Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 12, this iconic plot is located in the northern end of the Napa Valley in Calistoga. The vineyard experiences dramatic diurnal temperature swings with hot days and very cool evenings, allowing for long, even ripening. There is a wide range of soil types in this vineyard and is home to Beaulieu’s most diverse set of vine plantings including Touriga Nacional, Tempranillo, and Charbono.
