Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve wines are handcrafted from the finest grapes of the vintage, focusing on our premier estates in Rutherford, Carneros, and other Napa Valley appellations. Our Georges de Latour Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon has been widely recognized as the benchmark Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford since its inaugural vintage in 1936. Our understanding of terroir comes from more than 100 years of creating rich, classic Napa Valley wines.

The nose reveals layers of slate, Spanish cedar, suede, graphite, blackberry, black raspberry, and boysenberry. Wild lavender, thyme, juniper berry, olive, and kola nut add depth and intrigue. The palate is full and expressive, with a silky, mouthwatering texture. Red fruit flavors evolve into dark, alluring black plum and ripe blackberry, with mineral, herbal, and floral undertones. The tannins are signature Rutherford – silky, dusty, fine-grained, and chewy – providing ample structure with balance and finesse. The finish is exceptionally long and mouthwatering, with black pepper, clove, mocha, and cigar leaf. Refined, opulent, and age-worthy.

“The level of refinement and purity is immense, with flashy, perfumed aromas of black currants, olive brine, graphite, violets, mocha and licorice. The palate is in near-perfect balance, with a silken mouthfeel and fine-boned tannins that lead to a refined, pure and succulent finish. This is a truly excellent wine from an excellent vintage.”

“The Private Reserve is a full-throttle red in 2023, enticing with its upfront blue-fruit, graham-cracker crust, and lavish toasty-oak richness. Full-bodied and even more generous on the palate, it unspools in waves of blue, black and red fruit, with rich brown spices dusting the gravelly tannins. For all its richness, it carries an energetic lift that is a hallmark of the cool growing season. This is one Private Reserve to cellar for a good long while.” —Jonathan Cristaldi

Winemaking

At our state-of-the-art winery dedicated to Georges de Latour Private Reserve, a portion of the wine was fermented in new French oak barrels for early integration and a dense, rich texture. The balance was fermented in stainless steel and concrete tanks to preserve fruit freshness. After judicious extended skin contact, the wine was pressed and barreled for malolactic fermentation and aging. A small amount of Petit Verdot was blended with the Cabernet Sauvignon for enhanced aromas and flavors. We work closely with select cooperages to ensure an exact, consistent match for this wine’s style and elevated quality.

Vintage

The 2023 season saw ideal conditions. Heavy winter and early spring rains alleviated the drought, refilling groundwater reserves and reservoirs and increasing soil moisture for healthy vine vigor and a delayed bud break. Cooler weather held steady, lengthening hang times and culminating in elegance that beautifully reflects the unique terroir. Harvest began significantly later than usual, with Cabernet arriving in the last two weeks of October. Overall, the quality was exceptional. Prolonged ripening mitigated green flavors and tannins, resulting in a fresh, harmoniously balanced wine.

Vineyard

We hand-selected the best grapes from our iconic BV Ranches No. 1 and No. 2. Originally planted by Georges de Latour in the early 1900s, these vineyards lie on the western bench of the Rutherford AVA. We focused on clonal selections 6, 4, 169, 7, and 8, which yield small berries with the high skin-to-juice ratio needed to make intense, long-lived wines. These vines are deeply rooted in the well-draining, alluvial-fan soils of Rutherford, which is considered one of the finest regions in the Napa Valley for Cabernet Sauvignon.
