Brimming with classic "sauvage" character, this tribute to our western Rutherford benchland terroir opens with fragrant red berries, ripe plum, and hints of violet. The palate is silky with a plush, full-bodied texture highlighting black cherry, cassis, and pomegranate flavors, accented by wild brambleberry, red berry compote, and a hint of darker graphite. Polished and elegant, this wine offers firm tannins supporting with grip, depth, and structure. Bright acidity provides buoyancy and juiciness, keeping everything in balance and leading to a long, persistent Rutheford Dust finish.

Winemaking

Hand-picked grapes were destemmed and cold soaked for seven days for gentle flavor extraction. This allowed an elegant, layered fruit expression to develop while delicately releasing the natural Rutherford Dust cocoa-powder tannin expression. During the eight- to- twelve- day fermentation, we pumped over the cap to incorporate the flavor-rich skins into the juice. To balance the bold fruit expression with toasty oak character, we chose more than 80% new French oak for barrel aging and added a splash of Petit Verdot to enhance the complex flavor profile.

Vintage

The winter of 2022 was warm and dry. Rain and cooler weather arrived toward the end of March. The mild spring brought a promising early beginning, while the summer surprised us with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. As a result, the harvest produced smaller berries with concentrated flavors and remarkable acidity, resulting in balanced, excellent wines.

Vineyard

The 2022 vintage combines hand-selected parcels of Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot from BV Ranches No. 1, No. 2, and No. 10, as well as the incomparable Hewitt Vineyard, each one a truly elevated representation of our historic terroir. Hewitt Vineyard is located on the western Rutherford Bench, where diverse alluvial fan soils from the Mayacamas Mountains, including gravel, sand, and loam, encourage the vines to root deeply, developing complexity, minerality, and Rutherford's signature character.
