750mL

A deep, garnet gemstone hue, Beaulieu Vineyard’s 2022 Clone 6 Cabernet Sauvignon, is a seductive mélange of rich vanilla, black currant, kirsch, and graham cracker aromas, with a trailing mist of juniper on the nose. Dense and highly concentrated, the palate dramatizes a leathered core of black Amarena cherry and wild blackberry flavors, with savory touches of thyme and coffee bean. Its juicy acidity and deft, well-structured tannins hold through an intense finish. Enjoy this opulent wine with porterhouse, tomahawk, and other prime steak cuts seasoned simply or sauced with Bordelaise.

Winemaking

At our state-of-the-art winery dedicated exclusively to the production of our Reserve wines, we utilized the latest technology to destem and optically sort the berries to retain only the highest quality fruit. Cold soaking of the must and gentle pump-overs extracted the flavor-rich skins into the juice. Upon completion of primary fermentation, we pressed the skins and transferred the wine into French oak barrels to age for 21 months. Because of the unique character of this clonal selection, we treat the wine as a separate lot and bottle a very limited amount.

Vintage

The winter of 2022 was warm and dry, with rain and cooler weather passing through only toward the end of March. The mild spring gave an early start to the growing season, while summer surprised us with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. As a result, the harvest yielded small berries with concentrated flavors and remarkable acidity, from which wines of exceptional balance and taste were derived.

Vineyard

In the 1880s, UC Davis professor Eugene Hilgard planted clone 6 (also called the Jackson clone) at the university's Jackson field station in the Sierra Foothills. It was abandoned until being rediscovered almost a century later. In 1980, we began a 14-year series of trials in conjunction with UC Davis to identify Cabernet Sauvignon clones best suited to our Rutherford Bench terroir. Two clones (numbers 4 & 6) were ultimately selected for grafting to rootstocks planted in the well-draining, alluvial fan soils of our estate vineyards. As a component of our Georges de Latour and other reserve Cabernet Sauvignons, Clone 6 has small loose clusters and berries that yield highly concentrated, distinctive flavors. Often referred to as our mountain fruit on the valley floor, it produces Cabernet that is very concentrated with more structure and muscular tannins.
