750mL

Dark as the night sky, the 2022 Madame de Latour beckons with irresistible, atmospheric aromas of marine salt air, misty slate pathways, and coastal chaparral. Like a siren song, the nose is ethereal, alluring, and captivating. The palate is equally seductive and enchanting, with dense, velvety tannins and sweet, dark fruit flavors of black cherry and plum trimmed in black licorice. Finessed by an undulating acidity, the finish is dark and yearning, seemingly endless, with a lash of savory black olive burnishing the lush fruit. This powerful wine has exceptional aging potential but can also be enjoyed now with a selection of Gouda, Beemster, and Fiscalini cheddar cheeses.

Winemaking

After hand-harvesting, the grapes were immediately delivered to the winery where they were destemmed and cold soaked for gentle flavor extraction. During fermentation, we pumped over the cap to incorporate the flavor-rich skins into the juice. To balance the bold fruit expression with toasty oak character, we chose French oak (95% new) for barrel aging.

Vintage

The winter of 2022 was warm and dry, with rain and cooler weather passing through only toward the end of March. The mild spring gave an early start to the growing season, while summer surprised us with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. As a result, the harvest yielded small berries with concentrated flavors and remarkable acidity, from which wines of exceptional balance and taste were derived.

Vineyard

For this eponymous wine, we sourced Cabernet Sauvignon from the highly acclaimed Meteor Vineyard in the Coombsville AVA (located in Napa Valley’s southeastern corner). The cool-climate growing region has gravelly loam and well-draining, rocky volcanic soils. Vines planted here produce grapes with complex floral and earthy qualities, focused acidity, and commanding tannins. For juxtaposition, BV Ranch No. 12 Malbec was added to this blend to provide plushness and complexity. BV Ranch No. 12 is in Calistoga at Napa Valley’s northern end, where the dramatic diurnal climate, from hot days to very cool evenings, encourages long, even ripening over the course of the growing season. This valley-floor vineyard site yields small grapes with a high skin-to-juice ratio, desirable for intense color and flavor extraction.
