Tasting Notes

Tasting Note

Our 2019 Carneros Chardonnay is full of vibrancy and grace, exhibiting citrus aromas with fresh lemon, white floral blossom, pineapple, lychee and delicate hints of vanilla crème. On the palate there are layers of creamy lemon curd, candied lemon peel, crisp green apple, white pear, and a touch of white pepper spice. The oak shows nuances of graham cracker crust and is a pleasing backdrop supporting the core of zingy crisp acidity and fruit underpinning the overall round and textured complexity of the wine. The wine finishes long, dry, clean and refreshing. The inviting aromas, flavors, creamy texture and persistent mouth-watering acidity show a well-integrated wine that is incredibly food friendly pairing with all of your favorite meals. Viognier added a bit of floral and texture.

“The 2019 Chardonnay is a unique wine, as it includes a fair amount of Viognier that adds pretty floral and tropical overtones. Apricot, mint, tangerine oil, chamomile and dried flowers all open nicely in the glass.” - Antonio Galloni, March 2021

“Dried apple and pineapple with hints of coconut, steel and some flint. Full-bodied and tight with intensity and power. This will open nicely with bottle age. Try after 2022.” - James Suckling, June 2021

Winemaking

We harvested the Chardonnay and Viognier grapes into small bins at night and rushed them to our winery. After gently pressing the whole clusters, we barrel fermented one hundred percent of the wine in small oak barrels to add layers of flavor and texture complexity. Once in barrel, stirring the lees (yeast) during the 8 months of aging enhanced the silky mouthfeel, and integrated creamy nuances from partial malolactic fermentation. A small amount of fragrant Viognier is added to the blend, enticing floral nuances to the citrus fruit aromas.

The 2019 harvest started one to two weeks later than previous years, mostly due to February rains, but because the vines were in their winter dormancy, it did not affect the 2019 crop. Spring continued to be wet with some rain during flowering, followed by cool temperatures that allowed the grapes to mature gradually. The grapes ripened nicely with beautiful maturity and winemakers were pleased with the full flavors, vibrant acidity and superb balance of the 2019 fruit. Wildfires in October did not impact this year’s harvest as the vast majority of the grapes were already brought in, resulting in a crop size pretty much on par with previous years. The resulting 2019 wines are of very high quality with concentrated flavors and excellent acidity, especially for varieties like Chardonnay.

Vineyard

We selected most of the grapes from our Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 8 as well as some specific parcels from Ranch No. 9, where the vines, grafted to Dijon clones 95, 76 and Robert Young clone, yield small, intensely flavored berries. These Chardonnay vineyards are located in the cool, windy Los Carneros American Viticultural Area (AVA) at the southernmost tip of Napa Valley. The region’s shallow clay loam soils and marine-influenced climate foster ripe, beautifully balanced Chardonnay expression.
