2016 Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve Tapestry Napa Valley Red Blend

2016 Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve Tapestry Napa Valley Red Blend

2016 Beaulieu Vineyard Reserve Tapestry Napa Valley Red Blend

Description

Description

This is a wine that shows the artistry of blending five Bordeaux-heritage grape varieties, which contributed layer-upon-layer of flavor complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon gave the wine its generous core of briary blackberry and cassis expression, while we increased the amount of Merlot this year to tame the tannins and add plush mid-palate texture. Malbec contributed deep plum notes, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot completed the blend with nuances of rose, forest loam and graphite.

Tasting Note

The 2016 Tapestry is a powerful expression of the dream vintage, showing the true artistry of blending five Bordeaux-heritage grape varieties grown within the Napa Valley, which together contribute multi-layered flavors and complexity. The Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a generous core of brambly blackberry, cassis, and macerated blueberry, while the Merlot brings a vibrant, riper dark cherry fruit character. The Merlot also softens the tannins and adds plush rich texture on the mouth pleasing palate. Malbec contributed dark plum and briary blackberry notes, while the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot completed the blend with delicate floral nuances of violet and wild sage. Well integrated warm baking spice notes of cinnamon and clove also pique the senses incorporated from having been aged in new French oak barrels &-; which heighten the overall aromatic expression and linger on the finish. The tannins provide intensity, structure and depth, ensuring this vintage will outlast many others with significant age-worthiness. This is a wine that is the perfect bridge between old and new world &-; showing the restraint, elegance and sophistication of Napa Valley.

Vintage

The extended drought was beginning to cause real concern as the 2016 growing season kicked off, but some welcomed winter rain hinted at the relief to come. After a relatively dry January we enjoyed significant rainfall in February, along with mild temperatures. Bud break was early, but was slowed by heavy April showers. While still early by historical standards, picking began about a week later than 2015, right around Labor Day, and continued at a leisurely pace, allowing the grapes to reach full flavor maturity. A traditionally sized harvest followed the lighter showing of 2015, and the extended mild season helped to balance the acids and add complexity to the layers of flavors. Considered a perfect harvest and a winemaker's dream vintage, conditions were perfect for producing a Cabernet with beautiful fruit as well as tremendous concentration of flavors, highly saturated color, and layers of complexity.

Vineyard

We chose specific blocks of reserve-quality grapes that would give Tapestry the combined attributes of fruit expression and softer tannins for relatively early approachability. Half of the Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on the famous western benchlands of the Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA) and the balance from the Stags Leap District, Atlas Peak and Coombsville AVAs. The Merlot sourcing was split between our vineyards in the warmer parts of Carneros and the Rutherford Bench, while the Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec came from our estate vineyards in St. Helena and Calistoga.

Winemaking

We tailored the winemaking for each varietal to best capture the personality of both the vintage and specific vineyard block. Cold soaking of the destemmed grapes, gentle punch-downs in open-top fermenters and in-barrel malolactic fermentation all contributed to this wine's richly textured flavors. Aging in new oak barrels balanced the wine's impressive depth of varietal expression with toffee and spiced nuances.

Jeffrey Stambor - Former Winemaker

Jeffrey Stambor joined the Beaulieu Vineyard winemaking team in 1989 as a viticulturist/enologist. As the current director of winemaking, he leads production of the winery’s world-renowned Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, and presided over the harvest and vinification of 2013 Rarity – the extremely limited release Cabernet Sauvignon blend. He is only the fourth director of winemaking in Beaulieu Vineyard’s history, and the third to craft Georges de Latour Private Reserve over the 77-year history of that iconic wine following Andre Tchelistcheff, the original winemaker, and his immediate predecessor, Joel Aiken.
