Tasting Notes

Tasting Note

Our 2015 Tapestry is a true reflection of the exceptional 2015 growing season with its expressive, vibrant aromas and flavors, along with incredible structure, layered with an underscore of bright acidity that makes this wine incredibly approachable. This is a wine that shows the artistry of blending five Bordeaux-heritage grape varieties grown within the Napa Valley, which contribute layer-upon-layer of flavor complexity. Cabernet Sauvignon imparts a generous core of juicy wild blackberry, dark blueberry cobbler, and cassis, while the Merlot shows a brighter, riper dark cherry fruit character. The Merlot also softens the tannins and adds plushness and texture on the generous and pleasing mouthfeel. Malbec contributed dark plum and briary blackberry notes, while the Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot completed the blend with broad nuances of violet, wild sage, and anise seed. Well integrated notes of graham cracker crust and gingerbread also tantalize your senses from the toasted oak spices &-; having been aged in new French oak barrels &-; which heighten the aromas and linger on the finish. Amazingly food friendly.

    Wine Advocate

"The 2015 Reserve Tapestry Proprietary Red Wine is blended of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 7% Malbec, 4% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot aged in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak (60% new) for 22 months. It has a deep garnet-purple color and quite a toasty nose to begin, giving way to a beautiful perfume of roses and lilacs with a core of cassis, redcurrant jelly and blackberry tart plus a touch of cedar chest. Full, velvety and seductive, it delivers layers of perfumed red and black fruit with a very long finish.” - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, October 2018

Winemaking

Winemaking

We tailored the winemaking for each varietal to best capture the personality of both the vintage and specific vineyard block. Cold soaking of the destemmed grapes, gentle punch-downs in open-top fermenters and in-barrel malolactic fermentation all contributed to this wine's richly textured flavors. Aging in 60 percent new oak barrels balanced the wine's impressive depth of varietal expression with toffee and spiced nuances.

Jeffrey Stambor - Former Winemaker

Jeffrey Stambor joined the Beaulieu Vineyard winemaking team in 1989 as a viticulturist/enologist. As the current director of winemaking, he leads production of the winery’s world-renowned Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, and presided over the harvest and vinification of 2013 Rarity – the extremely limited release Cabernet Sauvignon blend. He is only the fourth director of winemaking in Beaulieu Vineyard’s history, and the third to craft Georges de Latour Private Reserve over the 77-year history of that iconic wine following Andre Tchelistcheff, the original winemaker, and his immediate predecessor, Joel Aiken.

Vintage

Vintage

A mild winter across California lead to early bud break in 2015 but limited rain and moderate temperatures throughout the growing season caused the overall length of the season to be consistent with years past. The yields in 2015 were slightly lower than the previous year, which lead to exceptional quality, resulting in a Cabernet with tremendous concentration of flavors, highly saturated color, and layers of complexity.

Vineyard

We chose specific blocks of reserve-quality grapes that would give Tapestry the combined attributes of fruit expression and softer tannins for relatively early approachability. Half of the Cabernet Sauvignon was grown on the famous western benchlands of the Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA) and the balance from the Stags Leap District, Atlas Peak and Coombsville AVAs. The Merlot sourcing was split between our vineyards in the warmer parts of Carneros and the Rutherford Bench. The Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec came from our estate vineyards in St. Helena and Calistoga.
