A classic wine, the 2013 Maestro Collection Ranch No. 1 is a Bordeaux-style blend from our historic vineyard in Rutherford. Although Merlot and Petit Verdot are in the blend, Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant varietal and offers aromas of black cherry, cassis and spice notes. The Merlot in the blend brings plush texture and bright red fruit aromas while the Petit Verdot adds firm structure, deep color and flavors of pomegranate and clove spice.

"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Ranch No. 1 Maestro Collection is deep, powerful and savory, with a real sense of structure underpinning the fruit. This is one of the more virile, imposing wines in the range. Herbs, smoke, licorice, tobacco and graphite shape the dark, brooding finish." - Antonio Galloni, January 2017
After hand harvesting, the grapes were immediately brought across the street into the winery. The grapes were destemmed and crushed and cold soaked for 2 to 4 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the 10 to 12-day fermentation, timely pump overs kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 22 months in 100% French oak barrels (40% new) giving the final blend softened tannins and toasty barrel notes.
Jeffrey Stambor joined the Beaulieu Vineyard winemaking team in 1989 as a viticulturist/enologist. As the current director of winemaking, he leads production of the winery’s world-renowned Georges de Latour Cabernet Sauvignon, and presided over the harvest and vinification of 2013 Rarity – the extremely limited release Cabernet Sauvignon blend. He is only the fourth director of winemaking in Beaulieu Vineyard’s history, and the third to craft Georges de Latour Private Reserve over the 77-year history of that iconic wine following Andre Tchelistcheff, the original winemaker, and his immediate predecessor, Joel Aiken.
The tremendous 2013 vintage in the Napa Valley may go down as one of the best in history. It was a great year, twin to the 2012 vintage, with exceptional fruit quality and good yields. Every step of the growing season was ideal from dry conditions to good bloom, bright sunny days and an uneventful, early harvest.
Encompassing the original Georges de Latour Estate, which was first planted in the early 1900's, Ranch No. 1 is an 80-acre property in the heart of Rutherford. With a variety of alluvial fan soils that foster exceptional quality in Bordeaux-style varietals, the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The well-draining gravel loam soils allow deep rooting and the development of grapes with complex flavors.
