Tasting Notes

This rich and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon offers vivid aromas of boysenberry, currant, dried lavender and warm Madagascar vanilla notes. Layers of flavor evolve on the palate from juicy ripe plum to mocha and fresh expressed espresso. The wine is approachable, plush and flavorful yet underpinned by firm, ripe tannins and good acidity for beautifully structured and overall, balanced wine.

Winemaking Notes

To develop this wine’s complex fruit expression, we first cold soaked the destemmed grapes for gentle flavor extraction. During fermentation, regular pumpovers incorporate the flavor-rich skins into the juice. Malolactic fermentation, which naturally changes the malic acid into softer lactic acid, rounds the flavors. The wine is barrel aged exclusively in 100% new French oak for 20 months.

Vineyard Notes

We selected the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes from our Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 2 in Napa Valley’s famous Rutherford AVA. The Cabernet Sauvignon blocks were replanted in the late 1980s and early 1990s to clones 4, 6, 7 and 5197. All of the clones are budded to one phylloxera-resistant rootstock, March 2016. Several trellising methods are employed for optimal sun exposure on the fruit, including vertical shoot positioning, lyre and Geneva Double Curtain. The alluvial loam soils vary according to slope on the Rutherford Bench, with the deepest, most gravelly soils nearest the Mayacamas Mountains.

Vintage Notes

A mild winter across California lead to early bud break in 2015 but limited rain and moderate temperatures throughout the growing season caused the overall length of the season to be consistent with years past. The yields in 2015 were slightly lower than the previous year, which lead to exceptional quality, resulting in a Cabernet with tremendous concentration of flavors, highly saturated color, and layers of complexity.
