Our Pinot Noir Ranch 5 showcases the fruit from one of our most treasured vineyards in the Los Carneros Region. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, under the guidance of legendary winemaker André Tchelistcheff, we grafted the vines to a selection of Pinot Noir clones that yield a complex, beautifully balanced wine. Now, our winemaker blends the delicate raspberry, floral and mineral notes of the Dijon clones with the deeper, ripe black-raspberry and cocoa character of clone 12. The wine’s silky texture is also enhanced by clone 12, which provides structure without being too tannic. Barrel aging weaves together the complementary wine components and adds hints of racy, smoky oak.

Vinyard Notes

The Georges de Latour family purchased Ranch No. 5 in the late 1950s as their first Beaulieu Vineyard property in the sheep-grazing Los Carneros region. Withpioneering spirit, they relied on André's prediction that Los Carneros would be a spectacular region for Pinot Noir, which proved accurate. We selected the grapes for this wine from two Pinot Noir blocks: the Dijon-clones are rooted in the northwest corner of the property and the clone 12 vines are grown in our "Maestro" block in the southeast corner, which was one André’s favorite site.
