Vintage 2014
Wine Type Red
Varietal Red Blend
Region Rutherford
Winemaker Jeffrey Stambor
The Grapes for this wine are sourced from Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 1 on the Rutherford Bench. This is our original vineyard, acquired in 1900. Selective blending of superior blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot produces a supple and approachable wine that boasts bold aromas and flavors of ripe berries. A generous dose of French oak provides roundness, integrating the rich and fruit flavors with opulent, mouthfilling texture.

92 Points - Vinous

"The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Ranch No. 1 Maestro Collection is deep, powerful and savory, with a real sense of structure underpinning the fruit. This is one of the more virile, imposing wines in the range. Herbs, smoke, licorice, tobacco and graphite shape the dark, brooding finish.” - Antonio Galloni, Vinous, January 2017

Tasting Notes

A classic wine, the 2014 Maestro Collection Ranch No. 1 is a Bordeaux-style blend from our historic vineyard in Rutherford. Although Merlot and Petit Verdot are in the blend, Cabernet Sauvignon is the predominant varietal and offers aromas of black raspberry, cassis and spice notes. The Merlot in the blend brings plush texture and bright red fruit aromas while the Petit Verdot adds firm structure, deep color and flavors of pomegranate and clove spice.

Winemaking Notes

After hand harvesting, the grapes were immediately brought across the street into the winery. The grapes were destemmed and crushed and cold soaked for 2 to 4 days to gently ease color and flavor. During the 10 to 12-day fermentation, timely pumpovers kept the skins in contact with the juice for excellent flavor and tannin extraction. The wine spent 20 months in 100% French oak barrels (70% new) giving the final blend softened tannins and toasty barrel notes.

Vineyard Notes

Encompassing the original Georges de Latour Estate, which was first planted in the early 1900’s, Ranch No. 1 is an 80-acre property in the heart of Rutherford. With a variety of alluvial fan soils that foster exceptional quality in Bordeaux-style varietals, the vineyard is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. The well-draining gravel loam soils allow deep rooting and the development of grapes with complex flavors.

Vintage Notes

Napa Valley experienced an excellent 2014 growing season - from spring bud break through flowering and verasion - conditions were ideal. Vintage 2014 will be noted as one of the earliest harvests on record and also remembered throughout the valley for the 6.0 earthquake that struck in August.
