Bright, with a luminescent gold color, this 2022 Carneros Reserve Chardonnay conjures fragrant aromas of citrus, orange blossom, and honeysuckle that invite lengthy appreciation before enjoyment of the first sip. The stone fruit palate of white peach and nectarine is enveloped in an elegant, French vanilla creaminess that lingers on the finish. Overall, this wine offers a lush and juicy experience with balanced acidity that will be best enjoyed during the next five years.

Winemaking

We harvested the grapes into small bins at night and delivered them to the winery in the cool of the morning. After gently pressing the whole clusters, we barrel-fermented the wine in small French oak barrels to add layers of flavor and textural complexity. The wine saw partial malolactic fermentation to soften the mouthfeel while bâtonnage (stirring the lees) enhanced the silky and creamy mouthfeel.

Vintage

The winter of 2022 was warm and dry, with rain and cooler weather passing through only toward the end of March. The mild spring gave an early start to growing season, while the summer surprised us with cool mornings and warmer afternoons. As a result, the harvest yielded small berries with concentrated flavors and remarkable acidity, from which wines of exceptional balance and taste were derived.

Vineyard

We selected fruit from Stanley Ranch in Carneros where the vines yield small, intensely flavored Chardonnay grapes. A splash of Viognier from Beaulieu Vineyard Ranch No. 9 was added to the blend to provide a fresh, floral lift to the wine. These vineyards are located in the cool, windy Los Carneros American Viticultural Area (AVA) at the southernmost tip of Napa Valley. The region’s shallow clay loam soils and marine-influenced climate foster ripe, beautifully balanced Chardonnay.
