BV Was There: Celebrating 125 years

A Beginning, 1900-1920s

2025 is the 125th anniversary of that historic moment. In preparation for our year-long celebration, we’ve been combing our archives and reconnecting with family, friends, and team members far and wide to rediscover the people and happenings that made it all possible.

1900

With three words, “Quel beau lieu!” Beaulieu Vineyard begins. On May 12, French immigrants Georges and Fernande de Latour buy the 4-acre Charles P. Thompson property with the ambition to make Napa Valley wines that would rival those of their homeland. Later called the Home Ranch, this parcel, situated next to our manor house, is now Beaulieu Gardens.

1903

Georges de Latour buys the 128 acres bordering the former Thompson property. It’s now known as BV Ranch No 1. In 1910, the couple expand their holdings to create BV Ranch No 2. Throughout this era, Georges imports hundreds of thousands of the choicest European vines via his nursery in Paris. He plants them in BVs vineyards and shares them with other growers throughout California.

1904

When Beaulieu Vineyard is officially incorporated, Georges is named General Manager and Fernande Director, becoming the only female manager or board member at any Napa Valley winery.

1920s

Sensing which way the cultural and political winds are blowing, Georges and Fernande obtain a warrant to produce sacramental wine well before Prohibition becomes the law of the land. BV is the first nationwide wine distributor to the Catholic church. Their foresight and business acumen keeps BV thriving throughout the 13-year federal alcohol ban. They even grew production fourfold, adding equipment throughout the facility and purchasing their neighbor’s 1885-vintage stone winery in 1923.
